2018 Yearly Challenges - Wrap-Up Post

I've decided it's much easier to do one wrap up post for the three yearly challenges I host. I hope this works okay for everyone.

I'm posting the links to those challenges below. If you completed the challenge (or even if you didn't) and you post a wrap-up, please link up in the original linky on the challenge sign up post. When you put your name/blog name, just add "wrap-up." Like so: truebookaddict/wrap-up

Here are the links to the 2018 challenges:

Be sure to leave a comment on the post so I know you added your wrap-up.

My yearly challenge stats for these three challenges:

While I didn't do so hot with the Read Your (Book) Shelf Challenge or the Yearly 13 Ways challenge, I kind of kicked butt with the Book To Movie Challenge.

I only managed to read four (well, really three) for the Read Your Shelf Challenge, as follows:

(books without reviews are linked to my Goodreads challenge page)

Don't Look Back by Karen Fossum (Did not review)

Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin (Did not review)

Rabbit, Run by John Updike (DNF - I tried. I really did. Read all about it here)

The Treatment by Mo Hayder (Did not review)

I finished two for the yearly 13 Ways challenge, which actually qualifies me for completing the Novice level. lol

I read...

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (Banned Books Week write-up)

Behind the Scenes at the Museum by Kate Atkinson (did not review)

As I said, I read quite a few for the Book To Movie Challenge. I'm pretty sure I met the criteria for at least one of the levels.

I read...

The Ritual by Adam Nevill

Howard's End by E. M. Forster

The Treatment by Mo Hayder

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

The Terror by Dan Simmons

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury

The Mistletoe Promise by Richard Paul Evans

Bird Box by Josh Malerman

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

I will be hosting these year long challenges annually so you will be able to mark a lot of books off your lists.

2. Pick a reading level.

Decide how many books from the lists you want to read in 2019.

13Ways Challenge Novice: 1 to 3 books
13Ways Challenge Eager Reader : 4 to 8 books

4. Register for this challenge in the Linky below.

Fill out the linky by doing the following:
Link title: Name and blog title (e.g. Michelle @ True Book Addict)
URL: Link to your Challenge Post, not your blog
If you ever have any difficulties using the form, or any other questions, don’t hesitate to email me. There's a contact me button in the sidebar.

5. Each time you read a book (and review, if you review) you can add your review to the 13 Ways Challenge review page.

Add your review on the 13 Ways Challenge review page and cross another book off your list for this challenge! Well done!

When sharing your reviews or discussing this challenge on Twitter, use the hashtag #13WLRP

6. Write a wrap-up post

I'll write up a wrap-up post at the end of 2019 and there will be a linky to link your wrap-up posts. If you finish before the end of the year, you can share your wrap-up link in the comments below.

GUIDELINES
  • The challenge runs from January 1 through December 31, 2019.
  • You can make a pre-selected list of books, or make it up along the way.

Again, if you find out about any I haven't mentioned, leave me a comment and I'll add to the list.

There are multiple levels for this challenge:

Level 1a: read 1-3 books
Level 1b: read 4+ books

Read only books being made into movies for release in 2019 (you are not required to only read from the list above. As I stated, if you find another movie or TV series/mini-series based on a book coming out in 2019, feel free to read it).

Level 2a: 1-3 books from 2019 movie releases, 1-3 books from books made into movies from previous years
Level 2b: 4+ books from 2019 movie releases, 4+ books from books made into movies from previous years

Here's a list of 2018 movies adapted from books. (Note: Some of the movies listed may have been moved to 2019).
You can also Google for previous years, or check Goodreads lists.

Level 3a: read 1-3 books from any release year, watch 1-3 movies from any release year
Level 3b: read 4+ books from any release year, watch 4+ movies from any release year

Note: Movies watched must be the movie adaptation of the book(s) you read.
  • The books you read can count for other challenges. Ebooks, audiobooks, and traditional formats all count.
  • The start date is January 1, 2019 so any book you started between the first of January, and now, counts. End date is December 31, 2019.
  • Remember, TV series/mini-series count too.
  • Pick your level
  • Sign up below and grab a button (below the linky). I hope you will join me!
  • If you have any questions, click the contact me button in the sidebar, or leave a comment.

2019 Read Your (Book) Shelf Challenge #ReadYourShelf

Year three! Once again, a shout out to the awesome book bloggers/booktubers who created the #RYBSAT (Read-your-bookshelf-a-thon), which I adapted this challenge from in 2017.

An admission on my part. I failed miserably at this challenge (AGAIN) in 2018. I'm hoping I will get it right this year. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!

Here's what you do:
  • Go to your bookshelves, or stack on the floor, or on your nightstand, etc. Pick out a book that you've been wanting to read on a particular shelf.
  • Now continue down that line of books on the shelf (in order) until you have 12 books. (Here's an example image - most of my books are stacked instead of shelved traditionally because I have so many!) So, I choose Christina Baker Kline's Orphan Train as my first choice and then I go up the stack until I have twelve total so I would end up at up at Summers' Vampires and Vampirism.
  • You might notice that there are a couple of extra books at the top...Floating Staircase by Ronald Malfi and the top one is The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius. These are alternate titles. I found that part of the reason I failed at this challenge is that I didn't have any options for alternates, which I now feel is essential, especially if your sequence of books has more than one by the same author. I'm limiting the alternates to a three book maximum.
  • You will then read your 12 books over the next twelve months, one book each month. You can read them in order (forward or reverse), or you can plug 1 - 12 (or 1 through your total number including alternates, if any) into a randomizer each month to pick your title for the month. The point is that you're not specifically choosing the book each month. It's chosen for you, either by ordered reading, or random choice.
  • If you find that one of the books is part of a series and you've already read it, I will allow a substitution of another book from the series. However, if you find this happening (a whole series, several by the same author, etc) in the stack/shelf you chose, and you don't like it, I would suggest picking a different stack/shelf.
  • What an awesome way to tackle books gathering dust on your bookshelves. Right?
  • Challenge runs January through December of 2019.
  • You can cross over books from your 12 books with other challenges.
  • Just remember to stick to the guidelines above.
  • Easy peasy!
ADDENDUM ONE: If you find yourself unable to finish one of your books in a month's time (I recently experienced this with a book I've found will take me a bit longer to finish, as I need to read it in doses), as long as you finish it during the challenge dates (January - December of current year), it counts. So, with the alternate reads option, and this addition, I think things should be much easier.

ADDENDUM TWO:  If you start the challenge late, mid-year, etc., you can read the number of books coinciding with the remaining months in the year. For example, if you start in June, you would pick a shelf (or section of shelf) with seven books (and 2 or 3 alternates) to give you your seven books for the remainder of the challenge dates parameters.
